Oil Painting

My paintings are of a variety of subjects. What most have in common is my attempt to capture an instant in time when I looked at something or someone and saw that thing or that person in a way that grabbed my heart and arrested me. My paintings are me trying to share that elusive and very visceral experience with others.

For about as long as I can remember I have loved art. It became my passion in high school. But after high school I took a break from art, focusing instead on a more “sensible” career– as a trusts and estates attorney. I have been blessed to travel extensively. I always knew I would paint again “someday” in my “spare” time, so I took photos everywhere I went. I often visited art museums and galleries all over the world. Sometimes I would leave a museum or gallery and realize my hands actually ached to be painting again.

Well, months turned into years-THIRTY EIGHT years. Finally I had seen enough of my clients die unexpectedly to realize I could not keep waiting for “someday.” There is never enough “spare” time. Life and work have a way of sucking it all up. I just don’t get around to doing anything that isn’t on my schedule. So, I came to understand I literally had to put art on my schedule or I wouldn’t do it.

I started enrolling in classes at Palomar College and through ROP. I have encountered so many helpful and wonderful people in the arts community. My most helpful and influential teachers have been Paul Ryker, Helen Schafer Garcia, Raye Anne Marks. Recently, I have had the honor and joy of studying in a small group with Richard Sturgulz and Leslie Sweetland at the Green Art House.

I have been pleased to have my paintings exhibited in juried shows at San Diegito Art Guild Offtrack Gallery, La Jolla Art Association gallery, Carlsbad Oceanside Art League gallery, Escondido Arts Partnership Municipal Gallery, and Escondido Art Association gallery.
